Car description
History of the Alfa Romeo Montreal
Montreal, 1967. The world gathers for Expo 67 – and amid all the bustle stands a small, low-slung coupé from Alfa Romeo, penned at Bertone. Visitors stop, stare and come back again. They simply name it after the city where they fell in love with it. Alfa Romeo listens – and in 1970, the production version rolls into the spotlight at the Geneva Motor Show: the Montreal.
Its lines are the work of Marcello Gandini, the man who created the Lamborghini Miura at the very same time. And it shows. The slats over the twin headlamps, like half-closed eyelids. The NACA duct on the bonnet. The six gills behind the doors. A car that looks fast standing still – and looks unmistakably Italian.
Under the bonnet beats a heart originally meant for the racetrack: an all-alloy V8 derived from the engine of the legendary Tipo 33. 2.6 litres, four overhead camshafts, dry-sump lubrication, SPICA mechanical fuel injection. Around 200 hp, a ZF five-speed gearbox, a limited-slip differential and a top speed of some 220 km/h. And above all: that sound. Throaty at idle, husky in the mid-range, and a metallic howl at the top that you will never forget.
Fewer than 3,900 were built until 1977. The Montreal remained the only V8 Alfa of its generation – a Gran Turismo in the truest sense, made for long distances, big emotions and that drive to the sea you never quite want to end.
Description of the Alfa Romeo Montreal Offered Here
The 1975 Montreal offered here wears what an Alfa ought to wear: Rosso Alfa. Paired with an interior in deep black. A combination that needs no explanation.
For eleven years it has belonged to a German collector – someone who knew exactly what was sitting in his garage. And who, throughout all those years, entrusted it to only one pair of hands: ours. First at the former Alfa Classic Center, today Scuderia Sportiva Servizio in Dortmund. Anyone who knows the Montreal knows what that means. The V8 and its mechanical injection demand expertise, patience and a fine ear. This car has received all of that – year after year, service after service.
And it is matching numbers. Under the bonnet still runs the very V8 with which this Montreal once left the factory. No replacement, no swap. Its own heart, from the very beginning.
Lift the bonnet and you find an engine bay just as connoisseurs would wish: authentic, well kept, honest. On the injection cover sits the original plaque – a small piece of engineering history from Arese.
From the outside, the Montreal is in the best of moods. The red paint gleams, the chrome sparkles, and every detail of Gandini’s design is complete and beautifully preserved. Add the typical Campagnolo turbine-style wheels – the finishing touch on this Gandini design.
Step in over the stainless steel sill plate bearing the Alfa Romeo script and you sit low and snug in the black seats. Ahead of you, the wooden steering wheel; your hands find their place all by themselves. An interior that makes you want to drive off immediately.
This Montreal presents in very well-maintained condition – it is plain to see that it has been loved.
Conclusion
There are cars you own. And there are cars that own you. The Montreal belongs to the second kind.
A Gandini design, an engine bred for racing, matching numbers and eleven years of uninterrupted care by people who know this car inside out. You do not come across that often. Honestly: hardly ever any more.
Turn the key, pause for a moment. Then the V8 awakens – and by the first blip of the throttle in a tunnel at the latest, you will know why you simply had to have this car.
Just how much this Montreal captivates is also shown by the visit of Mad Max. He took a very close look at the car at our premises – you can see his first impressions in his Instagram reel: https://www.instagram.com/p/DeR7W5-NJN6/. The test drive will follow shortly.
Che bella macchina. Andiamo.
Montreal may be far away – this Montreal is just a test drive away.
