Car description

Maserati Mexico 4.2 – Italian Nobility. Eight Cylinders. The Grand Tour.

Some cars exert their fascination even at a standstill. With the Maserati Mexico, a turn of the ignition key is all it takes to understand why the great grand tourers from Modena occupy such a special place in automotive history.

Elegant Vignale coachwork, generous glass areas, fine leather and beautiful wood combine with a charismatic V8 to create that distinctive blend of sporting spirit and effortless luxury that made travelling through Italy in the 1960s so desirable. A Mexico looks equally at home outside a grand hotel on the Riviera or on a winding country road in the hills beyond.

After its predecessor appeared at the Turin Motor Show in 1965, the production Mexico made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1966. According to Maserati’s factory figures, just 482 examples were produced between 1966 and 1972, including 300 fitted with the 4.2-litre V8. This makes the Mexico a particularly rare member of Maserati’s distinguished family of road cars.

The Story of This Maserati

This Mexico was first registered in Rome on 18 April 1968 under registration number B78418. A copy of its Italian Carta di Circolazione is available. Its entire history is traceable – an essential part of this car’s particular appeal.

Scuderia Sportiva Colonia imported the Maserati from Italy in 2014. Its condition and presence impressed our proprietor, Wolf von Massow, so much that he initially added the Mexico to his personal collection.

In 2016, the car was sold to a collector in Monaco; in 2023, it joined the collection of a German enthusiast. We are now delighted to accompany this special Maserati through the next chapter of its story, offering it for sale on behalf of its owner.

This Mexico has been serviced by us since 2014. We have therefore known the car for more than a decade – a longstanding relationship that goes well beyond a dealer’s usual acquaintance with a vehicle offered for sale.

Elegance in Bianco Polo Park

Finished in classic Bianco Polo Park white the Mexico’s balanced proportions are shown to beautiful effect. Original Borrani wire wheels provide the perfect finishing touch, bringing the exquisite craftsmanship that makes Italian cars of this era so distinctive.

The Maserati presents in excellent overall condition, with particularly impressive paintwork. The interior deserves special mention: the original leather upholstery and wood trim remain in near-new condition, reflecting the care and attention to detail that defined an exclusive grand tourer of its era. Tinted glass and air conditioning underline the car’s comfortable touring character.

Classic Character, Thoughtfully Refined

Beneath the long bonnet sits the 4.2-litre V8 – powerful, full of presence and blessed with a sound that gets straight under your skin. Even at idle, its character is unmistakable. As the revs rise, it develops that stirring Italian eight-cylinder soundtrack for which you will gladly leave the radio switched off.

Two discreet technical additions make the experience even more enjoyable: an electronic 123 ignition system manages the ignition, while retrofitted electric power steering provides noticeably greater ease, particularly when manoeuvring or negotiating narrow roads. Thoughtful refinements that complement the classic driving experience.

Our Verdict

For us, the Maserati Mexico remains one of the most underrated Italian grand tourers. Its rarity, elegant Vignale coachwork, charismatic V8 and spacious interior form a combination that few other classics can offer.

This particular example adds a traceable history, an exceptionally beautiful original interior and our longstanding technical care. A magnificent 2+2 grand tourer for those who wish to experience classic motoring with all their senses.

Before you, the toggle switches sit in a delightful row, like the keys of a miniature grand piano. Your fingers brush across them, then you turn the key. The V8 awakens – deep, sonorous, full of promise. A touch of the throttle, and the low rumble rises into the voice of a passionate tenor. What a voice. What a Maserati.

Lower the windows a little and head out into the warm evening air. The coastal road winds ahead, the sea shimmering beyond the next bend. You let the eight-cylinder sing once more. This is why you took the long way round.

Amore mio, let the others wait.
