Car description

Alfa Romeo 2600 Touring Spider

The 2600 Touring Spider was one of the last great creations of the Milanese coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, a name synonymous with the finest Italian craftsmanship and avant-garde design language.
Touring’s patented Superleggera construction – a delicate tubular steel framework clad in thin, hand-beaten aluminium panels – gave the Spider an exceptional lightness and perfectly balanced proportions.
The front, with its classic “Scudetto” grille and gently inclined twin headlamps, introduced a new design idiom for Alfa Romeo: elegant yet imbued with sporting tension.
The design was the work of Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni and his team at Touring Superleggera.

Technically, the 2600 represented a major advance over its predecessor, the 2000.
Its all-alloy inline six-cylinder engine, with twin overhead camshafts and three Solex C 40 PHH carburettors, delivered its power with cultured authority – accompanied by that unmistakable melodic timbre unique to Alfa’s six-cylinder engines.
The five-speed gearbox allowed quick, precise shifts, while disc brakes on all four wheels provided outstanding stopping power for its day.
Balanced weight distribution endowed the Spider with unexpectedly agile handling – despite its grand-touring comfort.

In the 1960s it stood as the automotive statement of cultivated individualists.
Between 1962 and 1965, only around 2,250 examples of the 2600 Spider were hand-built by Touring in Milan – each a bespoke expression of Italian elegance.

Description of the car offered here – SSC 650

The Alfa Romeo 2600 Touring Spider presented here was originally delivered to the United States and imported from Florida to Germany in 1990.
Since then, it has remained in private enthusiast ownership and has been maintained and mechanically refined with great care and expertise.

In January 2014, the car was registered to a prominent previous owner from the automotive industry.
Under his ownership, extensive work was carried out to bring the car to an outstanding technical and cosmetic standard.

The work performed included:
– complete renewal of the interior, including soft-top;
– high-quality repaint in excellent finish;
– overhaul of the heating and ventilation system;
– rebuild of the gearbox and replacement of the clutch;
– revision of the rear axle, differential and driveshaft;
– engine overhaul, followed by tuning, synchronisation and adjustment of the carburettor system.

After completion of this work, the Spider passed to its most recent owner, who continued to maintain it with the same level of care.

Today this 2600 Touring Spider presents itself in an exceptionally well-preserved and harmonious condition – mechanically precise, visually elegant and with that authentic presence found only in perfectly maintained originals.
Its Borrani wire wheels highlight its exclusivity and lend the Spider that refined, understated touch of extravagance which breathes the spirit of the great Gran Turismos of the 1960s – automotive works of art for connoisseurs of the exceptional.

This Touring Spider comes with German registration papers, the original U.S. title, customs documents from 1991, and a workshop manual.
Naturally, the car is registered and eligible for historic (Oldtimer) certification in Germany.

Résumé

The Alfa Romeo 2600 Touring Spider embodies what would later be called the “La Dolce Vita” spirit – the lightness of life, style, sunshine and a touch of aristocratic distance.
In the streets of Rome or along the Riviera, people drove with the top down, wearing sunglasses and silk scarves, listening to Peppino di Capri on the radio.
The 2600 Spider was the perfect automobile for that new generation of sophisticated Italians who lived between tradition and modernity – a Gran Turismo for connoisseurs.
It shared the boulevards with the open-top icons of its time – the Maserati 3500 GT Vignale, Lancia Flaminia Touring, and Ferrari 250 GT – all creations of the same glamorous epoch.
Yet the Alfa always appeared a little more refined, more discreet, more intellectual.

The 2600 Spider is not a loud statement, but a quiet, elegant one – a harmony of line and sound, composed for those who can hear beauty before they see it.

Recommendation

Several examples of the Alfa Romeo 2600 – both Touring Spider and Sprint – are regularly maintained in our service centre in Dortmund.
Drawing on this experience, we recommend – for a more balanced driving character – the installation of an electric power-assisted steering system, which noticeably enhances comfort in city driving while preserving the authentic steering feel.
For a smoother power delivery and a richer intake sound, we also suggest conversion to three Weber 45 DCOE carburettors.
These subtle performance-enhancing modifications can be carried out on request and at additional cost – always with full respect for the car’s originality and outward appearance.
