Car description

History of the BMW E9 Coupé

The BMW E9 Coupé is without doubt one of the most captivating automobiles in motoring history – a car that still stands today as a symbol of elegance, power, and timeless allure. When the 2800 CS was unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) in 1968, few could have imagined that it would lay the foundation for one of BMW’s most legendary series. By the time the 3.0 CSI appeared in the autumn of 1971, equipped with powerful fuel injection and 200 hp, the triumphant rise of a coupé destined to make history had truly begun.

Its design is pure poetry on wheels. The long hood, the flowing lines, the elegant, almost floating profile – all combine to make the 3.0 CSI a breathtaking presence on the road. The famous “Hofmeister kink” on the C-pillar, introduced by Wilhelm Hofmeister, has long since become an iconic design cue. Yet the influence of Italian design, through Bertone, is also unmistakable. From this fusion of German engineering precision and Italian elegance emerged a coupé that continues to enchant with its lightness, harmony, and filigree beauty.

But the E9 is more than a work of art to admire – it is an experience for all the senses. Beneath its hood beats the heart of a 3.0-litre straight-six engine, an embodiment of sheer driving pleasure. It propels the driver from 0 to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds, while the effortless blend of power and agility delivers a driving experience that feels equally at home on the autobahn or winding country roads.

The E9 also shone on its second stage – the race track. It served as the basis for BMW’s great motorsport legends of the 1970s, cars that set new standards across Europe and the world. Rarely has technological precision been paired with so much elegance – a reason why the E9 remains one of the most desirable classics today. With just 8,144 units built, the 3.0 CSI is not merely an automobile but a piece of rolling history. Sitting behind its wheel is like travelling back to an era when style and driving culture were inseparable.

The BMW E9 3.0 CSI – a timeless masterpiece that has lost none of its magic, even decades later.

History of the BMW 3.0 CSI – SSC-623

This BMW 3.0 CSI, chassis number 22635xx, carries a history as extraordinary as the car itself. On July 25, 1972, it was ordered by Dr. Ludwig M. of Oberursel through BMW dealer Friedel & Zervas in Frankfurt – in the rare, radiant shade of Inka (022) combined with a refined black interior. Our research shows that only 11 cars worldwide were delivered in this colour combination – a rarity from day one. Dr. M. also selected special options: front electric windows, a second exterior mirror, radio with automatic antenna, and three-point safety belts. On October 12, 1972, the car was delivered and registered under the plate HG-V 500.

Most impressive of all: Dr. M. preserved every single service and repair invoice until 1985. Such a complete documentation is virtually unheard of, even in the world of well-kept classics – a treasure for any collector.

After being decommissioned in 1986, the CSI entered a long period of silence. It first went into the hands of a BMW collector in Dresden, later moved to Holland, but never returned to the road. One owner began a restoration, respraying it in black, yet the project remained unfinished – a dream left halfway.

In 2016, renowned BMW collector Eric Bunte, founder of the legendary “German Exclusive” in the Netherlands, took charge. With great passion, he began returning the car to its original configuration. The body was meticulously restored and resprayed in its delivery colour, Inka.

Finally, Scuderia Sportiva was entrusted with the completion of this extraordinary vehicle – a task we are carrying out with the utmost care and dedication. Our work is not limited to faithful restoration but also includes the integration of thoughtful modernizations and enhancements that lift the E9 both technically and emotionally to a new level.

At this stage, the future owner enjoys an exceptional opportunity to make individual choices. The interior can be tailored – either in original black velour or elegant black leather. The drivetrain can be configured with the original 4-speed gearbox, a long-legged 5-speed, the rebuilt stock engine (200 hp), or the subtly upgraded version with programmable injection and electronic ignition (240 hp). Even the wheels can be selected: 14-inch Petrini with chrome hubcaps or sporty 16-inch Alpina replicas.

Thus, this will not be just any coupé, but a bespoke BMW 3.0 CSI, blending historical authenticity with the personal signature of its new owner – a car that harmoniously unites tradition and modernity. A BMW that, once completed, will not only look like new but truly begin a second life – including a reset of the odometer.
