Car description
BMW 2000 CS – a stylish forerunner of the great BMW coupés
When BMW unveiled the new 2000 CS at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 1965, it was far more than just another model launch. It was a statement: BMW no longer wanted to be defined solely by the technically solid saloons of the “Neue Klasse,” but also by an elegant, luxurious and sporting coupé. The 2000 CS combined advanced four-cylinder engineering with a representative appearance, becoming a brand ambassador and bridging the gap between the heavy V8 models and the new generation of light, dynamic coupés.
In its proportions and side profile, the 2000 CS clearly echoed the 3200 CS penned by Bertone. Its aristocratic elegance – long lines, clear surfaces, subtle tension along the flanks – was reinterpreted in a lighter, more technical way, focusing on the Neue Klasse. Thus, the 2000 CS became the stylistic link between tradition and the future, paving the way for the legendary six-cylinder E9 coupés. Without the 2000 CS, the E9 would never have taken shape as it did.
Between 1965 and 1970, only around 7,900 examples were produced – making the 2000 CS a rare sight even today. Positioned at the top of the Neue Klasse range, it offered 120 hp from twin Solex carburettors and was the most exclusive and sporting variant of the series.
The car offered here was first registered in Essen on December 18, 1969, to Hans-Harald W. under license plate E-PH 88. Built by Karmann and completed at BMW’s Munich plant, it left production in a particularly refined configuration: Polaris Silver metallic paintwork accentuating the crisp coupé silhouette, paired with a blue leather interior crafted from heavy calfskin – the same premium material BMW reserved for its top-line models of the late 1960s. To this day, this leather remains almost unmatched in quality, feel and durability – and it still carries the warm, distinctive aroma that instantly captivates connoisseurs.
On June 18, 1973, the car passed to its second owner, Liesel K. of Duisburg. Under registration DU-AK 82 it remained in her hands for almost two decades before being finally de-registered in March 1991. For nearly twenty years, the coupé disappeared from the road until, around 2005, it entered its second life with a painstaking, detail-accurate body restoration, returning it to its original form and elegance.
In 2010, as part of a collection sale, the CS came into the hands of renowned BMW specialist Thomas Feierabend. There it underwent a thorough technical overhaul: complete renewal of the braking system, Bilstein B6 suspension, engine rebuild with new cylinder head, new clutch, and conversion to a sporty 5-speed gearbox. A sports exhaust was added, giving the coupé not only more presence but also a rich and characterful sound.
In 2017, the car joined the collection of a prominent BMW enthusiast in Hamburg. It was further preserved with a Mike Sanders cavity protection treatment and enhanced with two rare details: ultra-rare Alpina steel wheels and an original Alpina wooden steering wheel. A particularly charming touch is the Becker Avus radio – one of the most exclusive units of its time – which makes the interior even more authentic. The original wheel set is also included.
Since 2017, the car has been meticulously maintained. Today it presents itself in outstanding technical and cosmetic condition – a coupé not merely preserved, but continuously perfected over decades.
The interior reflects the aspirations of a true Gran Turismo: fine wood inlays, premium materials and clearly arranged instruments made the 2000 CS a car for connoisseurs who valued individuality and exclusivity.
Its documentation is exemplary: the original cardboard title, BMW owner’s manual, BMW birth certificate, a comprehensive photo record of the restoration, a 2022 valuation report with the top grade 1, plus a full photo record of its time with Thomas Feierabend on CD.
Summary
This BMW 2000 CS is far more than a classic coupé – it is a rolling time capsule that keeps the spirit of the late 1960s alive. Its lines embody elegance and progress, its engineering bears the hallmark of seasoned specialists, and with its rare details it presents itself as a collector’s piece of exceptional authenticity. Over fifty years after its first registration, it looks fresher than ever – mechanically and cosmetically in near-perfect condition, with the aura of a one-year-old car.
Without exaggeration, this BMW 2000 CS ranks among the finest examples available on the market – a coupé of rare quality, unique history and timeless presence. It remains a stylish pioneer: inspired by Bertone’s pen, further developed by BMW, and to this day a symbol of the coupé tradition that made the brand world-famous.
