Car description

History of the BMW E9 Coupé

The BMW E9 is without a doubt one of the most significant classics in automotive history, representing to this day the perfect blend of elegance and performance. Its first major appearance came in 1968 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, when the 2800 CS was unveiled – a model that laid the foundation for the later success of the E9 series. The introduction of the 3.0 CSI in autumn 1971 marked the breakthrough of the coupé, setting new standards with its fuel injection system and an impressive 200 hp.

The E9’s design is a prime example of stylish automotive aesthetics. The long hood, sleek lines, and dynamic silhouette give the 3.0 CSI a striking road presence. Particularly iconic is the so-called "Hofmeister kink" on the C-pillar, named after BMW designer Wilhelm Hofmeister. At the same time, Italian influences are undeniable: this design element already appeared on the BMW 3200 CS, styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time at Bertone. This stylistic fusion gives the E9 a graceful lightness that sets it apart from its contemporaries.

Yet the E9 impresses not only with its looks. Under the hood, a powerful 3.0-liter inline-six engine delivers dynamic performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes well under eight seconds – an outstanding figure that ensures a spirited yet comfortable driving experience both on highways and winding back roads.

The E9 also made a name for itself in motorsport. It served as the foundation for many successful racing cars built by BMW Motorsport during the 1970s, setting new benchmarks in competition. The combination of technical refinement and aesthetic elegance made the 3.0 CSI one of the most sought-after classics of its era.

Only 8,144 units of the 3.0 CSI were produced, making it a highly coveted collector’s item today. Anyone fortunate enough to take the wheel of this coupé experiences the charm of a bygone automotive era that has lost none of its magic. The BMW E9 3.0 CSI remains a timeless symbol of style, innovation, and driving pleasure – a masterpiece that continues to inspire generations of car enthusiasts.

History of the BMW 3.0 CSI -SSC-500 Offered Here

This BMW E9 was first registered on December 9, 1972. Originally built as a 3.0 CS, it was comprehensively converted to CSI specification during its first restoration in the early 2000s. The last owner acquired the vehicle in 2020 and decided to subject it to a complete nut-and-bolt restoration, carried out by E9 specialist Scuderia Sportiva Colonia. Between 2022 and 2025, the BMW was fully disassembled and rebuilt down to the last screw. It was repainted in its original BMW color Anthracite Metallic (055), and the following enhancements were made:

  • Black leather interior with Recaro sports seats
  • Engine tuning to 240 hp (Version I) with programmable injection system
  • 123 electronic ignition
  • Upgraded braking system
  • Refurbished 5-speed Getrag overdrive transmission
  • 17" BBS aluminum wheels
  • Bilstein suspension with sport springs
  • Nardi wood steering wheel in "SSC" design
  • Special VDO Classic auxiliary instruments
  • Tinted windows
  • Front spoiler with integrated bumper
  • Polished aluminum strut brace
  • Stainless steel exhaust system
  • Bluetooth radio

In addition to the body restoration, all chassis, steering, and electrical components were professionally overhauled and adapted to the increased power output.

In short, this is a perfect, like-new BMW E9 with 240 hp, presented in one of the most elegant color combinations, awaiting its new owner. The vehicle still needs to be run in according to factory specifications. We offer a one-year warranty, provided all future service work is carried out at our facility.

Conclusion

Scuderia Sportiva Colonia has placed special focus on these technically sophisticated coupés. With its stunning design, superb chassis, excellent brakes, and powerful engine, the E9 was considered a benchmark in the early 1970s. The BMW slogan "Sheer Driving Pleasure" comes to life in the E9 in a uniquely authentic way. The interior spoils the driver with luxurious materials, the seats offer great comfort and decent lateral support, and the individual VDO round gauges are unmatched in elegance. One car tester aptly wrote: "If James Bond had been German, he would have driven a BMW E9 – especially appreciating the standard power steering in the CSI."

And for those who don't love the current color or installed options: we currently have over 10 more BMW E9s under restoration, with each customer able to choose their own original BMW paint color and features. We are happy to provide individual offers with detailed options upon request.

Note
