History of the BMW E9 Coupé
The BMW E9 is without a doubt one of the most significant classics in automotive history, representing to this day the perfect blend of elegance and performance. Its first major appearance came in 1968 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, when the 2800 CS was unveiled – a model that laid the foundation for the later success of the E9 series. The introduction of the 3.0 CSI in autumn 1971 marked the breakthrough of the coupé, setting new standards with its fuel injection system and an impressive 200 hp.
The E9’s design is a prime example of stylish automotive aesthetics. The long hood, sleek lines, and dynamic silhouette give the 3.0 CSI a striking road presence. Particularly iconic is the so-called "Hofmeister kink" on the C-pillar, named after BMW designer Wilhelm Hofmeister. At the same time, Italian influences are undeniable: this design element already appeared on the BMW 3200 CS, styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time at Bertone. This stylistic fusion gives the E9 a graceful lightness that sets it apart from its contemporaries.
Yet the E9 impresses not only with its looks. Under the hood, a powerful 3.0-liter inline-six engine delivers dynamic performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes well under eight seconds – an outstanding figure that ensures a spirited yet comfortable driving experience both on highways and winding back roads.
The E9 also made a name for itself in motorsport. It served as the foundation for many successful racing cars built by BMW Motorsport during the 1970s, setting new benchmarks in competition. The combination of technical refinement and aesthetic elegance made the 3.0 CSI one of the most sought-after classics of its era.
Only 8,144 units of the 3.0 CSI were produced, making it a highly coveted collector’s item today. Anyone fortunate enough to take the wheel of this coupé experiences the charm of a bygone automotive era that has lost none of its magic. The BMW E9 3.0 CSI remains a timeless symbol of style, innovation, and driving pleasure – a masterpiece that continues to inspire generations of car enthusiasts.
