Car description

The History of the Alfa Romeo Montreal

The Alfa Romeo Montreal is one of the most fascinating vehicles in Italian automotive history. With its combination of innovative technology, avant-garde design, and impressive performance, the Montreal quickly achieved classic status. Originally introduced as a concept car for the Expo 67 World Exhibition in Montreal, the model evolved into one of the most distinctive sports cars of the 1970s.

The design of the Alfa Romeo Montreal was created by Marcello Gandini, the renowned chief designer at Bertone. One of its most striking features is the unique pop-up headlights with movable slats, giving the car a futuristic look. The flowing lines, muscular proportions, and the characteristic air vents behind the doors emphasize the Montreal’s dynamic presence. The signature Alfa Romeo grille with the iconic Scudetto and the elegant rear end with slim taillights ensure a distinctive appearance.

Under the hood, the Montreal is powered by a 2.6-liter V8 engine derived from Alfa Romeo’s racing technology. This engine, featuring dry sump lubrication, double overhead camshafts (DOHC), and a mechanical Spica fuel injection system, produces 200 hp and enables a top speed of approximately 220 km/h (137 mph). At the time, this made the Montreal one of the fastest production cars of its era. The deep, resonant sound of the V8 further underscores the sporting DNA of this Alfa Romeo.

The chassis was also highly advanced for its time. The Montreal features independent front suspension and a solid rear axle with trailing arms and a Panhard rod. This setup provided precise handling and excellent road holding. Thanks to its agile driving characteristics and powerful engine, the Montreal was not only a pleasure to drive on the road but also found success in motorsports.

The interior of the Alfa Romeo Montreal blends sportiness with elegance. High-quality materials, an ergonomic cockpit layout, and classic round instruments define the cabin. The distinctive dashboard with deeply recessed gauges creates a driver-focused environment, while the sport seats offer excellent comfort and support.

Although the Alfa Romeo Montreal was only produced in limited numbers, it remains a true automotive legend. From 1970 to 1977, approximately 3,900 units were built. Its unmistakable design, powerful V8 engine, and exclusive technology make it a sought-after collector’s item and a milestone in Alfa Romeo’s history.

Since 2006, this Monti has been serviced by the former Alfa Classic Center (ACC), now Scuderia Sportiva Servizio in Dortmund. At the request of its last owner, this sports car underwent an extensive, nearly two-year restoration, modernization, and optimization process. The following work was carried out:

  • Complete body restoration
  • Repainting in the original Alfa Romeo color "Giallo"
  • Engine overhaul, including conversion to modern electronic fuel injection and ignition
  • Installation of speed-sensitive power steering for improved driving comfort
  • Chassis optimization by ACC, reinforced front stabilizer, and 4-piston brake system on the front axle
  • Modernization of the air conditioning system, conversion to the environmentally friendly refrigerant R134a
