Car description

History of the BMW E9 Coupé

The BMW E9 Coupé is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding vehicles in automotive history and remains a symbol of elegance and performance to this day. At the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in 1968, the 2800 CS was introduced, a model that laid the foundation for the later success of the E9. With the debut of the 3.0 CSI in the fall of 1971, featuring a powerful fuel injection system and 200 hp, the coupé experienced a true breakthrough.

The design of the E9 is a masterpiece in itself. The elongated hood, sweeping lines, and sleek profile make the 3.0 CSI an absolute eye-catcher on the road. The famous "Hofmeister kink" on the C-pillar, a hallmark of BMW design, was shaped by Wilhelm Hofmeister. However, the influence of Italian design is unmistakable: the stabilizing kink had already taken form in the BMW 3200 CS, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro while working at Bertone. This harmonious fusion gives the E9 a lightness and delicacy that is unparalleled in the automotive world.

But the E9 is not just a feast for the eyes. Under the hood lies the powerful 3.0-liter inline-six engine, delivering impressive performance. With acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in well under eight seconds and handling that excels both on the highway and winding country roads, the 3.0 CSI offers a driving experience that perfectly balances sportiness and effortless comfort.

The E9 was not only a star on the road but also on the racetrack. As the base vehicle for BMW Motorsport's legendary race cars of the 1970s, it achieved numerous successes and set new standards in motorsport. The combination of technical perfection and Italian design makes it one of the most coveted models of its era.

With only 8,144 units produced, the 3.0 CSI remains a highly sought-after collector’s item. Anyone who takes the wheel of this coupé experiences not only the fascination of a bygone era but also a piece of automotive history that continues to captivate car enthusiasts worldwide. The BMW E9 3.0 CSI – a timeless masterpiece that has lost none of its allure even today.

History of the Offered BMW 3.0 CSI - SSC-524

Quote from BMW Classic: “The BMW 3.0 CSi, VIN 22601xx, was produced on September 14, 1971, and delivered on May 29, 1972, to BMW dealer Wiegele in Gockhausen. The original color was "Chamonix" (color code 085)” In October 1973, Mr. Fritz B. from Vienna imported this BMW and sold it on the day of registration to Mr. Gerhard D., also from Vienna, with license plate W-677706.

On July 9, 1975, the vehicle changed ownership again, this time to Mr. Thomas G. from Kronenburg, Austria, who registered it under license plate N669990. Mr. G. drove the car until November 16, 1981, after which it was deregistered, the tax card was returned, and the vehicle was stored away.

It was only rediscovered in the early 2000s, extensively restored in "Fjord Blue Metallic," and re-registered in Vienna in 2006 with license plate W-47893 U. From that point on, this BMW 3.0 CSI was only used occasionally for classic car events.

Through a fortunate coincidence, Scuderia Sportiva Colonia had the opportunity to acquire this CSI in 2022. Since the paintwork was not executed properly, we decided to restore this BMW to its original configuration: Chamonix White with a blue velour interior. The engine and the installed 5-speed transmission were also completely disassembled and overhauled. The suspension was fitted with new bushings, shock absorbers replaced, the braking system overhauled with new discs and pads, and the tires renewed. This CSI is specially equipped with 16" Alpina rims, Alpina steering wheel, Alpina gear knob, strut brace and a CD radio.  Of course, we can cater for individual equipment requests (steering wheel / rims / radio configuration).

In short, a perfect, like-new BMW 3.0 CSI in one of the most elegant color combinations is now waiting for its new owner. This car still needs to be properly run in according to factory specifications. We additionally offer a one-year warranty, provided that all necessary service work is carried out at our facility.

Conclusion

Scuderia Sportiva Colonia has placed special focus on these technically refined coupés. The stunning design, excellent chassis, outstanding brakes, and powerful engine were the gold standard in the early 1970s. The BMW slogan "Sheer Driving Pleasure" comes to life in the BMW E9 in a unique and unmistakable way.

The interior pampers its owner with luxurious materials, the seats are very comfortable with adequate lateral support, and the individually framed VDO round instruments are unparalleled in elegance. As one car reviewer aptly put it: "If James Bond had been German, he would have chosen a BMW E9 as his company car—and he would have certainly appreciated the standard power steering in the CSI."

Oh, and if the color or installed options don’t suit your taste—we currently have over 10 other BMW E9 models in restoration, allowing each potential buyer to choose their preferred original BMW color and custom options. We are happy to provide an individual offer, including an options list, upon request.
