Car description

History of the BMW Diana

The history of the BMW DIANA begins in early 1970, when Hubert Hahne, with the idea of a limited series of luxury versions of the BMW 2002, obtains the approval of his patron, Paul G. Hahnemann, and holds an initial discussion with the coachbuilder Karl Baur in Stuttgart about the realisation.

The project began to take shape when Hahne - after ending his career as an active racing driver - married the young actress Diana Körner. The bridal gift was a dark blue BMW 2002 equipped with air conditioning, light-coloured leather upholstery and a high-quality stereo system. From the end of 1970, this one-off was to be followed by a small series of 12 unique models - now called BMW DIANA - in various colour/upholstery combinations, which were manufactured by Baur in Stuttgart. On the outside, the DIANAS stood out with a double headlight grille, exclusive Italian aluminium wheels and a particularly attractive paint finish.  Inside, the car offers a luxurious ambience previously unknown in cars of this class, with fine velour carpeting, leather-covered Recaro sports seats, an electric steel sunroof and a Becker stereo system.

The BMW DIANA was based on the BMW 2002 ti with two twin carburettors and 120 hp, which was built between October 1968 and April 1971. Hahne would not have been Hahne if he had not offered the DIANA with additional accessories and more powerful engines. As a result, there was an extensive range of equipment and engines from 120 to 170 hp

Vita & condition of the BMW Diana offered here

Unfortunately, eight of the original 12 Diana BMW 02s have been lost. Scuderia Sportiva Colonia already had the honour of accompanying one of the four surviving Dianas to its new home in 2023. Now we have the privilege of selling one again. Like all the others, this Diana on offer here was built by Baur / Stuttgart at the end of 1970 and registered for the first time the following year. At that time, Hubert Hahne had considerable difficulties selling his luxurious Dianas, as they were almost twice as expensive as a standard 2002 ti. In July 1971, the owner of a car dealership in Rheydt finally bought this BMW for his mistress. Whether this lady was also called Diana by her first name is unfortunately not documented.

Until its retirement in 1986, this special BMW was sold several times and, due to its outstanding performance, was also used in some racing events, which was not without damage. In 1996, this Diana was then acquired by a more than recognised BMW 02 expert and collector and completely and extensively restored over the years. The restoration was completed in 2002 in time for the BMW 02 annual meeting and was then duly honoured by the experts. Since the restoration, this Diana has only been shown at special events and trade fairs to a constantly amazed and delighted public. It is still in an exceptionally well-kept condition today. This Diana is equipped with a 2 litre engine, 150 hp. 5-speed gearbox and internally ventilated disc brakes. This BMW currently has German registration papers including a registration certificate as a classic car.

Summary

The sports car driver Hubert Hahne and the enchanting actress Diana Körner were the dream couple of the 1970s. Hahne, who was the first to drive a lap of the Nürburgring in a touring car in under 10 minutes, had created an icon by developing and selling a BMW 2002 specially designed for his wife. It is a very special vehicle, steeped in history, which should not be missing from any ambitious BMW collection due to its uniqueness.
