Car description

The BMW E9 Coupé

Under the famous slogan “Freude am Fahren” – “The Joy of Driving” – BMW promoted its elegant and perfectly proportioned CS Coupés. These cars are unquestionably among the milestones of BMW history, not least because of their superbly refined, turbine-smooth six-cylinder engine and their timeless, elegant design.

The engine, later known under the code M30, became one of the cornerstones of BMW’s reputation as an outstanding engine manufacturer. Produced in numerous variations until 1996, it remains a masterpiece: a grey-cast-iron block with an alloy head and a chain-driven overhead camshaft. Depending on bore size, displacements from 2.5 to 3.5 litres were possible.

Between 1968 and 1975, the E9 bodies were built under contract by Karmann in Rheine and then transported to Munich for final assembly – a less-than-ideal arrangement, as many cars suffered from weather exposure during the long transport. As a result, a significant number of cars had already disappeared from the roads by the 1980s.

The design is credited to Wilhelm Hofmeister, whose famous “Hofmeister kink” can be seen in the C-pillar. Yet the same stabilising line had already appeared on the BMW 3200 CS drawn by Bertone – clear evidence of Italian styling influence, which gives the E9 its light and graceful appearance.

The first model was the 2800 CS with 170 hp, followed by the 3.0 CS (180 hp) with twin carburettors. In autumn 1971, BMW introduced the first fuel-injected version, the 3.0 CSI, producing 200 hp.

At Scuderia Sportiva Colonia, we have always had a special passion for these technically advanced coupés. Their captivating lines, excellent chassis, strong brakes and powerful engine represented the state of the art in the early 1970s. Inside, the luxurious materials, comfortable seats with good lateral support and the beautifully framed VDO round instruments make the cabin a true delight. As one period road-tester wrote:

“If James Bond had been German, he would have driven a BMW E9 – and he would surely have appreciated the power steering of the CSI.”

History of the BMW 3.0 CSI – SSC 574

This BMW E9 3.0 CSI, chassis no. 22632xx, was delivered new by BMW to Italy in October 1972 and first registered there on 16 October 1972. According to the Italian registration papers (Carta di Circolazione), only two previous owners are known. The car also retains its original “Certificato di Proprietà” and the Italian owner’s manual.

Condition and Restoration – Car No. SSC 574

Since our founding, Scuderia Sportiva Colonia has sold, maintained or restored more than 200 BMW E9 models. It is rare to encounter an example as original and unmodified as this 3.0 CSI.

Despite its excellent starting condition, several careful body repairs were carried out:

  • New outer sills
  • New sill covers
  • Floor-pan repairs (driver and passenger sides)
  • Restoration of inner wings and strut-tower sections
  • New front panel (replaced due to a minor parking dent)
  • Repair of the fuel-tank frame
  • Overhaul of the bonnet ventilation ducts

All structural work has now been completed. The car is currently at the paint shop, receiving its final finish in the original colour Polaris Silver Metallic.

After painting, the beautifully preserved original interior, including the elegant wood trim and instrument cluster, will be re-installed. The static seat belts will be replaced with new 3-point automatic belts.

The chrome deliberately retains a touch of authentic patina. Owing to long storage in Italy, the matching-numbers engine is being completely overhauled. Suspension components, all bushings and Bilstein shock absorbers, as well as the braking system (hoses, pads, discs), are renewed or reconditioned.

The original 4-speed gearbox is being resealed and serviced; an optional rebuilt 5-speed transmission is available at extra cost. The underbody will be freshly sealed.

The electrical system is fully checked, with all fuses and bulbs replaced.
The original Petrini aluminium wheels are stripped and refinished, and fitted with new Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres.

In summary, this is a partially restored yet thoroughly refurbished and technically renewed BMW 3.0 CSI in exceptionally original condition.

Price: € 99,500 (after completion)

Summary

To this day, the BMW E9 series ranks among the most beautiful BMWs ever built. It offers comfortable seating for four and a generous luggage compartment, making it both elegant and practical. Few cars of the 1970s combine grace, sportiness and comfort in such a harmonious way.

At Scuderia Sportiva Colonia, we have made it our mission to preserve these outstanding automobiles with passion and craftsmanship. The E9 is a coupé to see and be seen in, carrying unmistakable DNA from BMW’s successful motorsport heritage. Even today, the 3.0 CSI drives like a modern BMW.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a highly original example of the coveted BMW 3.0 CSI.

For clients who prefer different colour or option combinations, we currently have more than ten additional BMW E9s available – either for sale or under restoration – allowing each buyer to select their preferred original BMW colour and specifications. Individual quotations with detailed option lists are available on request.
