Car description
History of the Ferrari 308 GT4
The Ferrari 308 GT4 was first unveiled to the public in October 1973 at the Paris Motor Show. Its design originated from the avant-garde pen of Marcello Gandini, who was working for Bertone at the time. Following two one-off creations based on the 250 GT, the 308 GT4 marked Bertone’s first production design for Ferrari.
Technical development was led by Angelo Bellei, while production was entrusted to Carrozzeria Scaglietti. The automotive press praised the model for its clean, modern and distinctive design language. Among Ferrari clientele, however, the angular wedge shape of the “Dino”-badged successor to the 206 and 246 was initially met with some reservation.
Particularly noteworthy was the packaging concept: for the first time, a mid-engined sports car successfully accommodated four full seats – a highly unusual solution at the time.
At the heart of the car lies the newly developed 90-degree V8 with four overhead camshafts, 16 valves and four Weber twin carburetors. This engine is regarded as one of the most characterful of its era and shares certain design principles with Ferrari’s larger twelve-cylinder units. From the moment it fires up, it delivers an immediate, mechanically vivid soundtrack that reflects the uncompromising nature of the period.
Contemporary reports also suggest that Clay Regazzoni was involved in the chassis development.
In the legendary “Kernenergie” comparison test conducted by auto motor und sport in 1974, the 308 GT4 outperformed competitors such as the De Tomaso Pantera, Porsche 911 Carrera and Maserati Merak. Journalist Helmut Eicker particularly highlighted its close relationship to racing-derived engineering and its high level of active safety.
Ferrari’s projected annual production volume of approximately 1,500 units proved optimistic. In its most successful year, 1974, only 764 cars were delivered. As early as 1975, Ferrari expanded the range with the more conservatively styled 308 GTB, later followed by the GTS. By 1980, a total of 3,626 GT4s had been produced, including the two-litre versions for the Italian and Spanish markets.
History of the Offered Vehicle (SSC No. 530)
The Ferrari 308 GT4 offered here was first registered in Italy in 1978 and benefits from a notably well-documented ownership history.
In 1987, Giorgio Alessandro F. of Milan acquired the car from its previous owner, Renato C. of Verona, and retained it for more than twenty-five years, driving it under the registration MI*5F3825 – a compelling testament to continuous use combined with careful maintenance.
In 2013, the vehicle was imported to Germany by Scuderia Sportiva Colonia. As part of this process, it underwent a comprehensive technical inspection as well as a high-quality repaint in its original factory colour “Ferrari Rosso”, before being placed into a distinguished private collection in southern Germany.
The alloy wheels are currently finished – at the request of the last owner – in an elegant gold tone that subtly complements the car’s design.
In 2023, a complete overhaul of the original “matching numbers” engine was carried out in the in-house restoration workshop of Scuderia Sportiva Colonia. This work included, among other measures, the installation of new pistons and cylinder liners, as well as a thorough rebuild and precise adjustment of the carburettor system.
Since completion of these works, the car has only been driven for a limited number of running-in and fine-tuning kilometres and today presents itself in a technically near-new condition.
Particular mention should be made of the original interior, finished in the period-correct combination of leather and cloth (“pelle e panno”), which remains in exceptionally well-preserved condition and underlines the car’s authenticity.
The suspension, underbody, body structure and paintwork are all in a condition that meets the highest standards.
The vehicle is currently registered in Germany and comes with historic vehicle certification in accordance with §23 StVZO. The sale is conducted on a consignment basis.
Summary
The Ferrari 308 GT4 represents Ferrari at its most engaging – a car defined by its driving dynamics. Not just any Ferrari, but arguably one of the most driver-focused models of its era.
While models such as the Ferrari Daytona, Ferrari 246 Dino or Ferrari 365 GT command significantly higher market values today, few can match the agility, lightness and immediacy of response offered by the 308 GT4. Even its V8 siblings, the Ferrari 308 GTB and Ferrari 308 GTS, appear comparatively restrained.
The often-cited comparison to a go-kart is, in this case, entirely justified: the GT4 responds to even the slightest steering input with remarkable precision, regardless of speed or corner radius. Its mid-engine layout delivers a balance and directness that make every drive an intensely engaging, mechanical experience.
At the same time, the 308 GT4 offers a degree of versatility rarely found in a mid-engined sports car. With four full seats, it extends its usability in a way that remains unique within Ferrari’s model history.
Having long shed its former reputation as an overlooked four-seater, the 308 GT4 is now increasingly recognised as a distinctive and highly rewarding Ferrari, with strong character and, in our view, continued potential for appreciation.
This represents a rare opportunity to acquire a highly original, exceptionally well-preserved and technically comprehensively restored example of this fascinating Ferrari.
