Car description

The Story of the BMW 02 Touring – Passion on Wheels

Bold presence – with plenty to back it up. That was the impression many visitors had at the 1971 Brussels Motor Show, where BMW unveiled the brand-new 02 Touring for the first time. What stood on the podium was more than just a sporty estate – it was a statement. Sleek, practical, full of character – a car that didn’t just reflect the spirit of the times, but helped shape it.

The Touring inherited the winning blend of driving dynamics and everyday usability from its sibling, the 02 Sedan. Identical up to the B-pillar, this “wagon coupé” surprised with a completely redesigned rear – bold, functional, and perfectly in tune with the emerging leisure culture of the 1970s. It didn’t just offer more space – it offered more freedom. The fresh, sporty styling gave the entire 02 lineup a welcome modern boost, blending elegance with performance.

Under the hood, engines ranged from 1.6 to 2.0 liters. At the top of the line stood the legendary 2002 tii with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, 130 horsepower and a top speed approaching 190 km/h – a true performance icon of its era.

While the 02 Sedan received rectangular tail lights as part of a facelift in 1973, the Touring proudly retained its original round lights – a signature design element that continues to captivate collectors today. Only 25,827 units were ever built – rare, distinctive, and steadily gaining in cult status.

The Life of This BMW 2002 tii Touring – A Car with a Story to Tell

,This particular BMW 2002 tii Touring is far from an ordinary classic – it’s a true witness to history. Originally ordered by the Lower Saxony Office for the Protection of the Constitution, it was used during one of the most turbulent periods in post-war German history: the surveillance of RAF terrorists. A BMW delivery certificate confirms its unique origin – including an exceptionally rare factory option at the time: a steel sunroof.

Three decades later, the car was discovered by none other than BMW 02 expert Andy Andexer, who carried out a passionate and uncompromising nut-and-bolt restoration. The entire body was KTL-coated before being painted – a testament to the meticulous work involved. Inside, the Touring exudes luxury: leather-wrapped sports seats, an original Alpina instrument cluster, and a leather-clad dashboard – a purist’s dream.

Under the hood lies a fully overhauled engine, matched with a rebuilt 5-speed sport gearbox and Bilstein suspension. Even the original police radio is still installed – a rare and authentic piece of motoring history.

A 2018 Classic Data appraisal awarded the car a top grade of “1” (mint condition) and a value of €69,000. Since then, it has been part of an exclusive BMW collection and still presents itself in a condition that borders on showroom quality.

Conclusion – A BMW Built for Sheer Driving Pleasure “Freude am Fahren”

This BMW 2002 tii Touring is more than just a car – it’s a design icon, a character actor, and a stylish corner-hugger. With its Kugelfischer injection system, 130 horsepower, and its refined yet athletic stance, it’s not only a thrill for enthusiasts – it’s a head-turner wherever it goes.

It brings together the best of both worlds: dynamic performance and true everyday comfort – with enough space for four passengers and their luggage. Its history is one-of-a-kind, its presence timeless. A perfect choice for collectors, connoisseurs, or anyone wanting to own a genuine piece of BMW heritage.

Get in, drive, fall in love – this Touring is a complete experience. And even after more than 50 years, its allure remains as strong as ever.
