History of the BMW E9 Coupé
The BMW E9 Coupé is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding vehicles in automotive history and remains to this day a symbol of elegance and performance. Unveiled at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in 1968, the 2800 CS laid the foundation for the future success of the E9. The introduction of the 3.0 CSI in the autumn of 1971, equipped with a powerful fuel injection system and delivering 200 horsepower, marked a significant milestone in the Coupé’s ascent.
The design of the E9 is a masterpiece in its own right. The elongated hood, flowing lines, and sleek profile make the 3.0 CSI a true head-turner on the road. The iconic "Hofmeister kink" on the C-pillar, a hallmark of BMW design, was created by Wilhelm Hofmeister. However, the influence of Italian design is unmistakable: the stabilizing kink was first seen in the BMW 3200 CS by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who worked at Bertone. This harmonious blend gives the E9 a sense of lightness and finesse unmatched in the automotive world.
But the E9 is not just a visual delight. Under the hood lies a powerful 3.0-liter inline-six engine that delivers impressive performance. With acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in well under eight seconds and handling that shines both on highways and winding country roads, the 3.0 CSI offers a driving experience that seamlessly combines sporty dynamics with effortless comfort.
The E9 was not only a star on the road but also on the racetrack. As the base model for the legendary BMW Motorsport race cars of the 1970s, it achieved numerous successes and set new standards in motorsport. Its combination of technical perfection and Italian design makes it one of the most sought-after models of its time.
With only 8,144 units produced, the 3.0 CSI remains a highly coveted collector’s item to this day. Sitting behind the wheel of this Coupé is not only a journey into a bygone era but also a chance to experience a piece of automotive history that continues to captivate car enthusiasts around the globe. The BMW E9 3.0 CSI – a timeless masterpiece that has lost none of its allure even today.
