Car description

BMW E9 – When Style, Engineering and Passion Become One

Some automobiles accompany us through life. Others leave a mark. The BMW E9, built from 1968 to 1975, is one of those rare vehicles that stays in your memory – not through volume, but through presence. Not through mass, but through character.

Its roots lie in the BMW 2000 CS, the first coupé of the Neue Klasse. But the E9 is much more than a successor – it is the natural evolution of a concept that finally received the stage it deserved: an elongated body, refined proportions and – above all – significantly more power. For the first time, BMW’s legendary inline-six engine found its way into a coupé-class car – a quantum leap that fundamentally changed the driving experience.

The elegant steel skin of the E9 was heavily influenced by Italian design house Bertone. The bodywork and pre-assembly were carried out by Karmann in Osnabrück before the vehicles were completed at BMW in Munich. Even this origin story shows: the E9 was a true collaboration of craftsmanship, style and engineering excellence.

With the E9, BMW created a vehicle that is more than a grand touring coupé: it is an expression of design awareness and technical maturity. Slim roof pillars, frameless doors, generous glass surfaces – and where the lines meet, delicate chrome accents shine with refined restraint. Never too much. Always just right. An elegance you would expect from Italy.

But the E9 is not just beautiful – it’s fast. The inline-six engine still stands today for silky smoothness, assertive power delivery and mechanical precision. It doesn’t make the E9 a cruiser, but a true driver’s car – agile, responsive, yet composed. In the early 1970s, this kind of performance was far from common and set new benchmarks for the competition.

Only around 30,500 units were produced across all E9 variants – a fraction compared to other model series of the time. That’s exactly where its value lies: each E9 today tells of an era when design was still drawn by hand, bodies were shaped in metal, and engines had a voice of their own.

The BMW E9 isn’t just a car you own. It’s a piece of automotive culture. A blend of form, engineering and driving joy – created for those who seek the extraordinary. Then and now.

Our Mission – Preserving Substance, Honoring Character

Over the years, more than 200 BMW E9 coupés have found their way to us – for service, repair, technical upgrades or full restorations. Some arrived as well-maintained originals with extensive service histories, others as incomplete projects, tucked away in garages or in boxes. What they all shared: the potential to return to what they once were – or even become something more.

Because the BMW E9 is no ordinary vehicle. Its body, built by Karmann, has always been a challenge: delicate, complex in construction and sensitive to age. Many early examples suffered from corrosion, and by the 1980s, many had all but vanished from the roads. That makes each surviving coupé today all the more valuable – whether driven or revived.

This is where our work begins – in every phase of a car's life. Whether it’s routine service, technical repair or a full restoration: at our workshop, the BMW E9 takes center stage. Every vehicle is handled individually – with expertise, care and deep familiarity with classic engineering.

For vehicles we restore, the journey begins with a complete teardown – a true nut-and-bolt restoration. We go deep into the structure of the body: every weld, every seam, every edge is exposed, inspected and rebuilt. This level of detail isn’t a marketing claim – it’s the foundation of our craft. Our individual photo books document every step, making the restoration process transparent and tangible.

Bodywork is carried out in collaboration with selected specialists who meet our strict quality standards and bring decades of E9 experience. After that, each vehicle is reassembled at our facility – piece by piece, step by step.

What emerges is more than a restored classic: it is a newly built BMW E9, authentic in spirit, refined in execution. Customer preferences are always welcome – from custom paint and interior combinations to suspension upgrades or a 5-speed transmission conversion. Classic wheel sets from Alpina, BBS or Mahle are also part of our program.

Scuderia Sportiva Colonia stands for lasting values: diligence, authenticity, technical depth. We see ourselves not just as a restoration shop – but as a service partner for the entire life cycle of these remarkable vehicles. Together with Scuderia Sportiva Servizio in Dortmund, we carry this philosophy over to the world of Italian classics – from Alfa Romeo to Ferrari.

Because our mission is clear: not just to restore what once was – but to keep alive what still matters.

Tempted by a BMW E9?

Anyone who has driven a BMW E9 knows: it’s no ordinary coupé. It’s an experience – of form, sound and movement. And it’s an experience you can own.

In our current inventory, you’ll find vehicles ready for new journeys:

  • Road-ready classics with story and soul
  • Freshly restored masterpieces, refined to the highest standard
  • Carefully selected base vehicles awaiting their rebirth – shaped by your vision

Whether you seek an authentic original or prefer the path to a bespoke restoration: each E9 in our care has been thoughtfully selected. Some speak softly, others with power – but all speak with soul.

And for those who want to blend classic aesthetics with modern performance, we open another door:

Our Restomod Program

Combine the elegant silhouette of the E9 with modern drivetrain technology – such as the powerful inline-six from the first-generation BMW M5 (E28), with up to 340 hp. Subtle suspension and brake upgrades included. On the outside, a design icon of the '70s. On the inside, a modern driving machine.

You choose the path. And we bring the experience.
