History of the Maserati 3500 GT – Touring
In 1957, a true sensation took center stage at the Geneva Motor Show: the Maserati 3500 GT. For the first time, the prestigious Modenese manufacturer ventured into series production – and how! This magnificent coupé succeeded the striking A6G54 and set new standards for the Gran Turismo class. By 1964, a total of 1,972 examples had been built, featuring the stunning aluminum "Superleggera" bodywork by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan.
Beneath its elegant shell lay pure power. The robust inline-six engine was based on the legendary Tipo 350S but was refined with masterful engineering, particularly in the crankshaft and valve train. The introduction of the GTI in 1961, featuring modern mechanical Spica fuel injection, marked another milestone. With an all-aluminum construction, twin overhead camshafts, and a sharp twin-plug ignition, this powerhouse delivered sheer sovereignty and catapulted the 3500 GT to the top of the luxury sports car segment.
And the design? A feast for the eyes! No wonder the 3500 GT is regarded as a style icon. Touring skillfully combined its patented tubular spaceframe construction with a captivating aluminum body. The result? A perfect balance of elegance and dynamism! The smooth lines, the noble Ponton style, and the subtly accentuated fins on the rear fenders embody Maserati’s philosophy in its purest form – not just raw power, but the epitome of a luxurious Gran Turismo with a spacious interior and generous luggage capacity.
It is no surprise that the high society of the 1960s was enamored with this Maserati – none more so than Prince Rainier of Monaco. And who could blame him? Effortless entry, a bright and airy interior, and an engine that delivers seamless response even at low revs. Add to that a precise gearbox, smoothly operating clutch and brakes, and in front of the driver, a suite of exquisite Jaeger instruments that keep track of every heartbeat of this magnificent GT.
History of the Maserati 3500 GTI - SSC354
First delivered on August 7, 1962, and officially registered in the Pubblico Registro in Italy on October 14, 1964 – a story steeped in authentic Italian style and elegance. The second owner, Paolo F. from Treviso (Italy), acquired this GTI in 1980 and sold it over two decades later to a flamboyant industrialist. His extraordinary collection of over 400 cars and motorcycles was eventually auctioned at one of RM Sotheby’s largest classic car sales in Milan in 2016. At that time, this Maserati reportedly had a mere 22,600 kilometers on the odometer and had been repainted in an elegant green shade over the years.
The new owner entrusted the renowned Scuderia Sportiva Colonia with the comprehensive restoration of this exceptional Gran Turismo. With meticulous attention to detail, the Maserati was completely dismantled and restored according to Scuderia’s proven "nuts & bolts" restoration concept. However, fate had other plans: due to changing personal circumstances, the owner commissioned Scuderia Sportiva Colonia to complete the restoration and handle the sale independently.
Today, this coupé shines once again in its breathtaking original Maserati color, "blu sera." The bodywork is complete, and the car is in the final stages of assembly. The "matching numbers" engine was carefully disassembled, inspected, and, due to its outstanding condition, reassembled and resealed by experts. The same meticulous approach was applied to the legendary ZF gearbox. The Spica injection and the braking system and all auxiliary components have been thoroughly overhauled. Currently, this Maserati is in the hands of one of Europe’s finest upholstery craftsmen, ensuring an interior crafted with original Italian materials and absolute perfection.
Conclusion: In short: an automotive style icon awaits a true connoisseur of Italian Dolce Vita. A driving experience full of emotion, featuring the fascinating twin-cam engine, the breathtaking Touring Superleggera design, and the perfect balance of sportiness and comfort. A mesmerizing blend of attributes whose irresistible charm remains undiminished even after more than 60 years.
