Car description
Volvo 122 S Coupé – Rallye Build in the Spirit of the 123 GT
A Volvo Amazon Coupé – but not the kind built for quiet Sunday drives.
This car is not a factory-built 123 GT.
It is a period-style interpretation.
Based on a Volvo 122 S Coupé, this Amazon was, according to the previous owner, already modified in the 1970s in the spirit of the legendary 123 GT. A car that does not try to be more than it is. And that is precisely what makes it so appealing: honest, mechanical, robust – and with a clear motorsport attitude.
The Volvo Amazon has always been a car for people with a sense of substance. No loud promises, no fashionable statement, but a dependable companion with Scandinavian clarity. Yet in its sporting form, the Amazon revealed another side. The 123 GT became a sought-after basis for rallying, regularity events and ambitious historic motorsport – stable, resilient and simple enough to remain manageable even under competitive conditions.
This coupé captures exactly that character.
Under the bonnet works a stronger engine with twin carburettors. Not a sterile, over-refined unit, but a classic drivetrain with presence, eagerness and mechanical directness. The sports exhaust gives it the right voice: crisp, present and with just the right amount of noise for a historic rally car.
The chassis follows the same idea.
Sports suspension, limited-slip differential and a short-ratio gearbox turn this solid Swede into a surprisingly lively tool for winding country roads, special stages and historic rallies. This is not about show. It is about connection.
Step inside.
Close the door.
Tighten the harnesses.
Turn the key.
The Volvo feels instantly familiar – and ready at the same time.
Inside, the character continues consistently: sports seats with harness belts, sports steering wheel, roll cage, additional instruments, electronic tripmaster and fire extinguisher. Everything feels purposeful, credible and rooted in a time when motorsport still involved improvisation, skill and courage.
The details are not mere decoration.
The period-style decals give the car its unmistakable presence. The Marchal auxiliary lamps with 100-watt bulbs do not feel staged, but entirely natural. And the original Minilite wheels suit this Amazon so perfectly, as if they had never been made for anything else.
In 2015, Wolf von Massow, owner of Scuderia Sportiva Colonia, acquired this Volvo and used it occasionally in classic car rallies. Its most recent outing was in 2023 at the Rallye Köln-Ahrweiler – the kind of event where a car like this needs no explanation. It is simply understood.
Technically and visually, the Volvo presents itself in very good condition. The bodywork is solid and shows no visible signs of corrosion. Copies of the Italian registration document “Carta di Circolazione”, the “Certificato di Proprietà” and an old FIA passport from 2006 are present. The last Italian owner successfully campaigned this Volvo in international ice rallies – a clear indication that this car was not merely built to look sporting.
Today, the Volvo comes with German registration documents including historic vehicle approval.
This coupé is not aimed at someone looking for a flawless standard Amazon.
It is aimed at people who do not merely collect historic automobiles, but want to experience them. At drivers who understand that authenticity does not always come from factory originality – but sometimes from history, use and character.
Not a museum piece.
Not a show-off.
Not an ordinary classic.
But a Volvo Amazon with attitude.
A 123 GT interpretation for people who do not simply want to drive.
But to arrive – preferably a little sideways, a little loudly, and with a broad grin.
