Car description

Maserati Mexico 4.7 – Factory Twin-Ignition and Documented One-Off

Not every automobile becomes an exception. This one does.

This 1968 Maserati Mexico 4.7 belongs to that rare category of automobiles whose true significance reveals itself only upon closer examination.

According to official factory archive confirmation, this is the only known Maserati Mexico delivered from new with twin ignition (“doppia accensione”). A technical solution that, at the time, was primarily reserved for motorsport applications or experimental development stages – but not for regular Gran Turismo series production.

The 4.7-liter V8 of the Maserati Mexico is part of the V8 engine family developed by Giulio Alfieri, whose fundamental architecture was employed by Maserati in various evolutions over more than three decades – from 1959 to 1990 – shaping an entire era of Italian high-performance Gran Turismo and sports cars.

In this special Mexico configuration, the V8 was factory-equipped with twin ignition – two distributors and two spark plugs per cylinder. This construction optimizes combustion quality, enhances thermal stability, and enables a distinctly performance-oriented setup.

We deliberately refrain from quoting a precise horsepower figure, as no dyno testing has yet been conducted. It is, however, evident that the engine configuration exceeds standard production specifications.

Design and Restoration

The elegant bodywork was penned by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Vignale – a collaboration that gives the Mexico its clear yet powerful design language. The long bonnet, balanced roofline, and confident front fascia convey the timeless authority that defines Italian Gran Turismo automobiles of the late 1960s.

Scuderia Sportiva Colonia acquired this exceptional vehicle in 2014 with the objective of restoring it uncompromisingly and in strict historical correctness.

The restoration is being carried out as a complete “nuts & bolts” process with the involvement of renowned specialist workshops and is executed by a leading European restoration facility with particular expertise in Vignale coachwork. The body restoration has now been completed.

During the course of the restoration, the car was refinished in the original Maserati color “Blu Tigullio” – a deep and elegant shade that beautifully accentuates Michelotti’s design lines.

The interior is being retrimmed to original specifications with black leather seats and black carpeting – a timeless combination that further emphasizes the sporting elegance of the Mexico.

Current Status

  • Complete body restoration finished
    • Refinished in Blu Tigullio
    • Full overhaul of the 4.7-liter V8 by Candini in Modena
    • Overhaul of the ZF 5-speed gearbox
    • Suspension and braking system fully revised
    • All chrome components newly replated and polished
    • Original Borrani wheels professionally restored by Borrani
    • Interior newly crafted using correct Maserati leather hides and period-correct carpeting

A distinctive detail is the Jaeger operating-hours clock integrated into the dashboard. The vehicle is currently in the careful reassembly phase – each component installed with the same precision with which it was originally built in Modena.

Equipment and Atmosphere

The Maserati Mexico was never intended to be a stripped-out racing machine, but rather a luxurious high-speed Gran Turismo.

With power steering, air conditioning, and electric windows, this example was equipped with features that represented the pinnacle of automotive refinement in the late 1960s.

Inside, beyond the beautifully arranged Jaeger instruments, the delicate row of toggle switches immediately draws attention – precisely aligned, almost like the keys of a grand piano.

Fine leather hides, polished wood, and deep carpeting create the warm and cultivated atmosphere characteristic of Italian Gran Turismo automobiles of this period – a blend of craftsmanship, material quality, and technical elegance rarely encountered today.

Completion of the restoration is anticipated approximately three to four months after order placement and receipt of deposit.

Provenance

First registered on April 24, 1968, through the renowned Milanese luxury automobile dealer Rolma Automobili S.r.l. The initial registration in the Province of Milan is documented under the license plate MI F37526.

On February 24, 1969, the vehicle was transferred to Pibigas Idrocarburi S.p.A., Milan, an important Italian energy company of the period.

On May 13, 1969, ownership passed to Giuseppe M., Milan/Monza, followed by a transfer on May 4, 1970, to Virgilio G. and Giuseppe C., Como.

In subsequent years, the car moved to northeastern Italy and became the property of Nello G., Castelfranco Veneto (TV), a personality known within the regional economic sphere and the historic automobile scene.

In 2014, Scuderia Sportiva Colonia acquired this unique example.

The complete Italian ownership history is fully documented. The Maserati currently retains its original Italian registration documents.

Summary

This Maserati Mexico is a historically significant one-off – the only documented example delivered by Maserati with factory twin ignition.

A large V8 from Modena.
Coachwork by Michelotti.
Built by Vignale.

A rare combination of comfort, elegance, and technical sophistication.

For connoisseurs and collectors, this represents an opportunity not merely to acquire a rare Maserati, but to secure a distinctive chapter of Maserati’s engineering heritage.
