Car description

History of the Alfa Romeo GT Bertone

1963 was a significant year in automotive history. At the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), true icons were unveiled, such as the Porsche 901, the first Mercedes "Pagoda", and the new Alfa Coupé. The new coupés were sober, sleek, harmonious, and functional. Designed by Giorgio Giugiaro of the Bertone design house, they are among the most timeless and beautiful creations to come from that studio.

Under the hood was Alfa Romeo’s renowned twin-cam engine, which had made its debut in the 1953 Giulietta and was still considered one of the best four-cylinder engines in the world ten years later. Featuring an aluminum engine block and cylinder head, two overhead camshafts, and a robust duplex chain for the camshaft drive—and in the case of the coupé, two twin carburetors—this engine, combined with a sophisticated chassis and standard four-wheel disc brakes, thrilled every driving enthusiast.

The 1300 and 1600 GTA racing versions easily outpaced the competition. The Bertone GT collected trophies on racetracks even after its production ended! More than 200,000 units were produced in Arese, Italy. Unfortunately, corrosion and poorly executed accident repairs took a toll on these coupés over the years, significantly reducing the number of surviving examples.

Profile of the Offered 1600 Giulia Sprint GT Veloce “Restomod”

The Alfa Romeo 1600 Giulia Sprint GT Veloce offered here represents the top model of the highly sought-after first series (characterized by the "step-nose" hood).

This car was restored in 2016, and at the request of the current owner, the fenders were widened. From 2021 to 2025, the Alfa Classic Center (now known as Scuderia Sportiva Servizio) in Dortmund carried out extensive restomod work. The goal: to create one of the fastest Bertone coupés around—without sacrificing everyday usability. The following refinements were made:

  • Complete overhaul and optimization of a used Alfa Romeo 2.0L Twin Spark engine with a lightened crankshaft, custom lightened connecting rods, new custom forged pistons with piston cooling, custom lightened flywheel, ported cylinder head, larger valves, optimized combustion chamber, and specially made camshafts
  • Twin carburetors converted to a fully programmable fuel injection system
  • 5-speed sports transmission with hollow shafts and lightened gear set
  • SACHS racing clutch
  • Custom Bilstein shock absorbers with Eibach sport springs, lowered by 30mm
  • Motorsport oil/water heat exchanger
  • Lightweight racing alternator and starter
  • Limited-slip differential, 10:41 ratio
  • Handcrafted stainless steel exhaust system with tubular headers
  • GTA replica wheels (7x14") with Toyo 195/65-14 tires
  • New 55-liter fuel tank
  • Gel battery mounted in the trunk
  • Conversion from standing to hanging pedal assembly
  • Dual-circuit brake system with ATE 4-piston calipers and ventilated front discs

Interior features:

  • Original Veloce seats
  • Driveshaft tunnel upholstered in leather
  • GTA replica steering wheel with polished spokes
  • Black perforated Alcantara headliner
  • Tinted glass

According to existing invoices, the total investment in this vehicle exceeds €250,000!

The first registration of this Veloce was on June 6, 1966, in Italy. In 2016, it was sold to its most recent owner, under whose direction the aforementioned restoration and modification work took place.

Currently, this Alfa Romeo comes with Italian registration documents.

Conclusion

This "step-nose" Bertone not only embodies the classic Italian Dolce Vita spirit but is also a beautifully designed, timeless coupé with incredible and rarely matched performance. In short, a breathtaking design icon with modified technology—a true wolf in sheep’s clothing. Not for purists, but perfect for Alfisti who appreciate a thrilling, sporty coupé with a power-to-weight ratio that can rival some of the big names from Maranello.

Spare parts are still available at reasonable prices. Our sister company, Scuderia Sportiva Servizio (formerly Alfa Classic Center) in Dortmund, can provide full service and parts support.

We are selling this Alfa Romeo on consignment on behalf of the current owner.
