Car description

History of the Alfa Romeo GT Bertone

1963 was indeed a year that changed the automotive world forever. At the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, car enthusiasts witnessed the unveiling of vehicles that are now considered icons. Alongside Porsche, Mercedes and other brands, Alfa Romeo also presented a coupé that would remain unforgotten in the decades that followed: the Alfa Romeo Bertone Junior. Designed by none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, this model is a milestone in automotive design - timeless, clear and sporty, without superfluous gimmicks.

Hidden beneath the elegant exterior was an engine that was considered a technical masterpiece both then and now: Alfa Romeo's legendary twin-camshaft four-cylinder engine. This engine, which made its debut in the Giulietta in 1953, was still pioneering in terms of technology and performance ten years later. With a light alloy block, an aluminium cylinder head and the two overhead camshafts, Alfa set standards for sporty engines. The use of a solid duplex chain for the camshaft drive and the fitting of two twin carburettors in the coupé versions made the vehicle a dream for sporty drivers. This engineering skill was complemented by an elaborate chassis and four disc brakes as standard, giving the Bertone Junior an outstanding reputation on the road and on the racetrack.

The racing variants of the coupé, in particular the 1300 GTA and 1600 GTA, became legendary. They made headlines not only for their technical specifications, but also for their superior performance on the racetrack. These vehicles ‘drove circles around the competition’ and collected trophies like no other car in the 1960s and 1970s. Even after the end of production, the Bertone GT continued its winning ways on the racetracks, which emphasises its outstanding performance.

Despite a facelift in the early 1970s, which gave the coupé a smoothed front end, its commercial success remained unbroken. Over 200,000 examples of this masterpiece were produced in Arese, Italy. However, time was not always kind to the Bertone coupé: corrosion and poorly carried out repairs following accidents meant that the worldwide stock was greatly reduced over the years.

Today, the Alfa Romeo Bertone Junior is not only a collector's item, but also a symbol of an era in which technology, design and driving pleasure came together in perfect harmony.

Vita of the Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1300 -2000 -SSC605 offered here

The Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1300 offered here is a particularly sought-after example of the so-called ‘edge bonnet’, one of the most sought-after versions of this model series. Originally delivered in Italy, the vehicle was imported to Germany in the early 2000s and fully restored here. Since 2014, the Alfa has been in the collection of a true Alfa Romeo enthusiast, who has had the vehicle regularly serviced and modified at the Alfa Classic Centre (ACC) in Dortmund.

What particularly characterises this GT Junior are the extensive improvements that make the vehicle an outstanding driver's car. The ACC suspension, consisting of Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs with special ACC tuning, ensures a significantly sportier yet comfortable driving experience. The front reinforced stabiliser bar and the adjustable GTA-style upper wishbones offer precise steering characteristics and improved stability in bends. The rear axle has also been optimised with reinforced bushes and new bearings, while the brake system has been completely renewed - a measure that is not only sporty but also relevant to safety. In addition, a larger fuel tank and an electric petrol pump were installed to ensure a steady supply even on longer journeys or when driving in a sporty manner.

The original 1.3-litre engine has been replaced by a 2.0-litre engine which, together with the matching rear axle, comes from a larger Alfa Romeo model. This performance upgrade is already registered in the German papers and ensures that this Junior not only impresses with its looks, but also with its performance.

The body of this Alfa Romeo has been cavity-sealed to counteract the known weak points in terms of corrosion. The paintwork and genuine leather interior were regularly treated with high-quality Swissvax care so that the vehicle is now in excellent condition. The combination of a professional restoration and careful care over the years gives this Alfa a charming patina that sets it apart from purely restored examples and lends it an authentic character.

This GT Junior is an extremely attractive proposition, particularly for collectors or ambitious sports drivers looking for a classic Alfa Romeo with character and impressive technology. The car is currently offered with deregistered German registration papers and is ready for a new owner who appreciates its driving characteristics and unique style.

Summary

In short: a gorgeous icon of Italian driving culture is waiting for its next owner. The Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1300, equipped with the legendary twin-camshaft engine and the powerful 2-litre unit, combines timeless design with incomparable driving pleasure. The sporty comfort, precise steering and modern technology make it an exceptional classic whose fascination has lost none of its magic even after more than 50 years. Finding an example in this outstanding condition is extremely rare, especially with one of the coveted edge bonnets and the technical modifications.
