History BMW 1600 GT

BMW took over the Glas company in Dingolfing in 1966 and inherited fantastic Frua bodies commissioned by Hans Glas; used in the Glas 1300 and 1700 GT Coupé, among others. Another Frua design was the large Glas V8 Coupé. BMW streamlined the Glas sales programme at the time and used, among other things, the legendary and rev-happy 1.6 litre BMW ti engine in the GT Coupés, fitted with two Solex twin carburettors and good for 105 hp. Furthermore, the front axle was modified and, among other technical changes, "space" was created for the legendary BMW kidney. This breathtaking bodywork combined with this racy engine is an exceptionally successful combination, as the specialist journalists also attested. The crux of the matter was that BMW launched the 02 series at the same time and these were competing with the 1600 GT. So after just under 1 year of production and approx. 1250 vehicles, production was regrettably discontinued in August 1968.

Vehicle history of the BMW 1600 GT offered here

The BMW 1600 GT offered here is demonstrably from the first family ownership. The original registration paper (Pappbrief) is still present. This vehicle was sold on 23.5.1969 by the BMW dealer Hermann Menton in Reutlingen to Mr. Herbert L. in Berlin and registered in Berlin on 01.07.1969. The original delivery note and the original invoice are available. The delivery colour was the rare original BMW colour "Bristol". In 1979 this 1600 GT was handed over by the first owner to his son and finally decommissioned in 1985. For decades this vehicle lay untouched until it was finally discovered by the Scuderia Sportiva Colonia in 2020 and underwent an extensive, professional, almost 3-year "nuts&bolts" restoration. The entire technology was overhauled, the bodywork restored and painted in its original colour, and the interior and electrics renewed.

Now it is finished and presents itself in absolutely new condition. Everything is original, no modifications. From our point of view the best and most authentic BMW 1600 GT you can buy worldwide. Most BMW 1600 GTs are in the hands of collectors. In our opinion, this sports coupé should not be missing from any ambitious collection, true to the motto: "Joy of driving". This BMW really is a joy to drive. The legendary 1.6 litre engine with 105 hp -also called BMW barrel organ- fascinates to this day and with its low kerb weight of only 980 kg it is of course easy to drive. The Frua bodywork conveys Italian lightness. The new owner can look forward to unadulterated pleasure. We will only hand this BMW over to sensible hands.
