Car description

History of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale

When Alfa Romeo added the Sprint Speciale to the Giulietta family at the end of the 1950s, one of the marque’s most distinctive and beautiful cars was created. The Giulietta SS was not an ordinary coupe, but an aerodynamically shaped berlinetta whose design philosophy was closely related to the Alfa Romeo B.A.T. studies.

Franco Scaglione designed the body for Bertone with a clarity that still fascinates today: the low nose, the flowing roofline, the steeply inclined rear window and the short, clean tail combine to create a shape that does not feel fashionable, but almost timeless. With a drag coefficient of approximately 0.28, the Sprint Speciale was far ahead of its time.

Technically, the Giulietta SS remained a true Alfa Romeo. Its lightweight twin-cam four-cylinder engine, five-speed gearbox and precise chassis made it a very fast yet wonderfully communicative sports car. It was not only beautiful, but genuinely sporting.

Only 1,366 examples of the Giulietta Sprint Speciale were built. Even within the already rare Alfa Romeo 101 series, it is therefore one of the most desirable Bertone designs and one of those cars that are rarely seen, even at major classic events or in important collections.

Description of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale Offered Here

The car offered here is an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale that has been under our care for many years. We therefore know this car not from a brief sales inspection, but through regular maintenance, servicing and technical supervision.

The bodywork presents itself in exceptionally good condition. It is rust-free, cleanly finished and has precisely the kind of structural integrity that is especially valuable on a Sprint Speciale, as this rare and complex body shape is demanding to restore correctly.

The car has German registration documents, making it particularly straightforward for a future owner in Germany. At the same time, this provides a very good basis for later registration or export to other European countries.

A special technical refinement is the carefully built and tuned 1.6-litre Alfa Romeo twin-cam engine, producing approximately 110 hp. This upgrade suits the character of the Giulietta SS exceptionally well, as Alfa Romeo itself later made the same evolutionary step with the Giulia Sprint Speciale: more displacement, more torque and greater ease of performance, without losing the classic Alfa Romeo character.

The engine is lively, willing to rev and at the same time refined. On country roads in particular, the stronger 1.6-litre engine gives the Sprint Speciale noticeably greater flexibility, while preserving its light, direct and very authentic character.

Inside, the Giulietta has been enhanced with seats from the Giulietta Spider. They suit the car stylistically very well, while offering significantly better comfort, making longer drives noticeably more enjoyable. The light interior with black accents harmonises beautifully with the red bodywork and underlines the elegant line of the Sprint Speciale.

The period-style aluminium wheels visible in the photos suit the car very well and underline its sporting line. Based on the current impression, they are most likely high-quality replica wheels; final attribution to manufacturer, specification and dimensions should still be confirmed separately by checking the markings on the wheels themselves.

Before delivery, this Giulietta SS will receive our comprehensive 267-point service programme. Engine, carburettors, ignition, cooling system, driveline, brakes, suspension, electrics, controls, sealing and road behaviour will be systematically checked, adjusted and documented.

Our aim is for the future owner not to take over a project, but a fully functional Alfa Romeo in every detail, ready to be enjoyed immediately. In a car as rare and visually extraordinary as this one, that technical confidence is an essential part of the overall experience.

Conclusion

There are Alfa Romeos that need to be explained, and there are Alfa Romeos that are understood the moment one stands in front of them. This Giulietta Sprint Speciale clearly belongs to the second category. Its shape is not merely beautiful, but bold, aerodynamic and still completely individual today. It feels like a piece of Italian post-war avant-garde, built for someone looking for more than just another classic car.

Its origin story makes this fascination even stronger. The SS was less a conventionally planned commercial coupe than an aerodynamic statement: Alfa Romeo wanted to prove that a 1.3-litre twin-cam engine and uncompromising body design could break the 200 km/h barrier. It succeeded, and that technical idea can still be felt today.

What makes this particular car especially compelling is something that should never be underestimated with rare automobiles: confidence. It has been under our care for many years, it has German registration documents, a rust-free body, the more effortless 1.6-litre engine with approximately 110 hp and the kind of thoughtful improvements that do not falsify the car, but make it more enjoyable to use. The Spider seats, the stronger engine and our 267-point service programme before delivery turn this SS not into a museum object, but into an Alfa Romeo that can be driven with pleasure and peace of mind.

We have also presented this Giulietta SS on Facebook and Instagram. In the current Reel, Wolf von Massow briefly explains what makes this automotive icon so fascinating.

Anyone looking for a Sprint Speciale is usually not looking only for performance, condition and history. They are looking for a shape, an attitude and a piece of Italian automotive culture that cannot simply be replaced. This Giulietta SS offers exactly that, together with the reassuring knowledge that it will be prepared by us in detail before handover.

Perhaps all she needs now is the right Alfista.
