History of the BMW 3.0 CSi · Series 2 offered here
This 1974 BMW 3.0 CSi belongs to the second series of the legendary E9 model range. With its elegant proportions, refined inline-six engine and high level of equipment, it perfectly embodies the character of BMW’s great Gran Turismo of the 1970s.
One of the special features of this particular car is its attractive Turquoise exterior finish, which harmonises beautifully with the delicate chrome details and the classic lines of the coupé. Its extensive comfort specification includes an electric steel sunroof, four electric windows, tinted glass, power steering and a high-quality full black leather interior.
The history of this BMW 3.0 CSi is remarkably complete and distinctly Bavarian. The coupé was first registered in Weiden in der Oberpfalz in 1974. In 1979 it moved to Schirmitz, before returning to Weiden in 1986. In 1989, the BMW was finally deregistered and taken off the road – a concise and traceable history of a kind that has become increasingly rare among cars of this age.
Following its acquisition by Scuderia Sportiva Colonia, the car underwent an extensive “Nuts & Bolts” restoration between 2020 and 2022.
Bodywork, mechanical components and interior were comprehensively restored with great care. The objective was never merely cosmetic refurbishment, but rather the recreation of an exceptionally high-quality overall automobile – while always preserving the characteristic appearance, elegance and distinctive driving experience of a classic BMW E9.
The restoration went far beyond a conventional strip-down: the body itself was dismantled deep into its structural elements and subsequently rebuilt step by step. The individual stages of this extensive restoration are documented in a detailed restoration book.
Wherever sensible and possible, original historic substance was preserved. Wherever renewal was required, the work was carried out to the standards of an exacting coachbuilt restoration.
In 2026, a technical issue within the engine lubrication system provided reason to open the engine once again. Scuderia Sportiva consciously decided against a limited local repair and instead opted for a comprehensive mechanical rebuild.
The inline-six engine was completely dismantled, measured and professionally rebuilt. As part of this work, the engine received new pistons and piston rings. At the same time, the cylinder head was fully overhauled, while gas flow through the intake and combustion cycle was further optimised. All relevant components were inspected and, where necessary, reconditioned or replaced.
As a result, the mechanical heart of this BMW 3.0 CSi is today in exceptionally fresh condition. The newly rebuilt engine is currently still undergoing its careful running-in period – something that can certainly be regarded as a rather special feature in a classic car more than fifty years old.
Together with the very low mileage covered since completion of the restoration and the exceptional overall condition, this coupé today feels less like a classic car more than five decades old and more like a BMW E9 whose second life has only just begun.
In addition to the comprehensive restoration, the BMW was selectively refined in a number of areas. The guiding principle was always the same: every modification should preserve the character of the E9 while further enhancing its qualities as a sophisticated Gran Turismo.
The original gearbox was replaced by a 5-speed overdrive transmission. The additional fifth gear reduces engine speed particularly at higher cruising speeds and further underlines the CSi’s qualities as a refined long-distance Gran Turismo – without altering its original character.
A stainless-steel exhaust system combines durability with the sonorous sound of the classic BMW inline-six. 16-inch alloy wheels in classic Alpina style give the car a subtly sportier appearance without detracting from the period character of the E9.
This is complemented by a number of discreetly integrated comfort and safety features that make the car more enjoyable and convenient to use in modern traffic.
Additional equipment & special features
For many years, the restoration, preservation and sympathetic development of the BMW E9 series have formed a particular focus of Scuderia Sportiva Colonia. Through its continuous work with these technically and structurally demanding coupés, the Scuderia has developed into one of the more established independent specialists for the BMW E9.
At any given time, more than ten BMW E9s are in our inventory in various stages of restoration, completion or sale. This places Scuderia Sportiva Colonia among the relatively small number of European specialists working with this exceptional model range at such an intensive level.
The experience gained extends from bodywork and corrosion protection to suspension, engine and drivetrain, as well as interior, electrics and authentic detailing. Every E9 restored by us benefits from this knowledge, built up over numerous projects, and from our ambition to return these cars to a technical, craftsmanship and aesthetic standard worthy of their special place in BMW history.
Conclusion
This BMW 3.0 CSi is an E9 for the enthusiast who does not wish to choose between authenticity and usability. Its classic appearance and traceable history are combined with a comprehensive coachbuilt restoration and carefully integrated technical improvements that further enhance its qualities as a Gran Turismo.
Nothing was modernised simply for the sake of being modern. Every change respects the character of the original automobile and follows the philosophy that a great BMW of the 1970s should still be able to be driven today with pleasure, confidence and ease.
A classic BMW with the presence of its era, the craftsmanship of a comprehensive restoration and the mechanical substance to deliver many more years of “Sheer Driving Pleasure.”
