Car description

History of the Maserati Bora

When Maserati unveiled the Bora to the public at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, it quickly became clear: this was no familiar Gran Turismo from Modena – it was a uncompromising, highly modern supercar. The Bora marked a turning point in the brand’s history: for the first time, Maserati’s engineers adopted a mid-engine layout, a configuration that remains the gold standard among high-performance sports cars.

Giorgetto Giugiaro, already one of the most visionary designers of his era, created for the Bora a wedge-shaped, avant-garde form that retains its impact to this day. Clean lines, flat proportions and a sharp, purposeful silhouette gave the car an appearance far ahead of its time.

Technically, Maserati also took bold steps: in collaboration with Citroën, the Bora received a high-pressure hydraulic system which – futuristic like few other innovations of its era – operated, among other things, the adjustable pedal box, height-adjustable headlights, power-assist functions and brake pressure control. A concept that combined Italian passion, technical innovation and artisanal precision in a truly unique way.

The Bora was not only Maserati’s first true series-production mid-engine car – it was also a dynamic and technological challenge to the Lamborghini Miura and Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer.

The Maserati Bora offered here – Model Year 1972

This Maserati Bora from 1972 is one of the particularly desirable early examples of this remarkable model series.

It was first delivered in France, one of the most important markets for high-performance Italian sports cars in the 1970s. Under the rear deck sits the original matching-numbers engine, exactly corresponding to factory production – a key attribute sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.

With original 95,600 km, this example presents itself in a highly authentic and very good overall condition. The history is fully traceable, with service entries and maintenance documents clearly reflecting continuous, professional care.

Mechanically, the Bora feels impressively confident: the engine runs both smoothly and powerfully, and the chassis is precise and direct – delivering the kind of driving experience that only a true mid-engine supercar of the 1970s can offer. Its behaviour is intense, agile and at the same time remarkably stable, clearly distinguishing it from the heavier Maserati Gran Turismos of its era.

The craftsmanship reflects Maserati’s artisanal tradition: intricately manufactured, carefully assembled and shaped by genuine Italian mastery – not industrial perfection, but character-rich, hand-built excellence.

A particular highlight is the Maserati Classiche Certificate, officially confirming the car’s originality and model conformity – an increasingly important factor on the international collectors’ market.

Conclusion

The Maserati Bora embodies that special blend of temperament, elegance and technical audacity that made Italian supercars of the early 1970s so legendary. Its mid-engine layout, Giugiaro’s avant-garde lines and the distinctive Modenese craftsmanship give it an aura rarely encountered today – sensual, powerful and unmistakably autenticamente sportiva italiana.

And as befits a Maserati, the journey does not end with the purchase.
The Scuderia Group in Dortmund and Kirchen is delighted to support you with future maintenance and service work – with passion, technical expertise and the appreciation for Italian classics that a car like the Bora truly deserves.

A fantastic Bora awaits you – ready to write its next chapter.
