Car description

History of the Alfa Romeo Giulia 1.3 TI

The Alfa Romeo Giulia 1.3 TI is an impressive example of Italian automotive engineering, combining technical sophistication with stylish design. It belongs to the first Giulia series, introduced in 1962, which quickly established itself as one of the most advanced sedans of its time. The designation “1.3 TI” stands for “Turismo Internazionale” and refers to the model’s sporty yet comfortable orientation. Under the hood is a 1.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine with twin carburetors which, despite its modest size, delivered lively performance—typical of Alfa Romeo. With around 82 horsepower, the Giulia 1.3 TI accelerated effortlessly and reached a top speed of approximately 160 km/h—impressive figures for a lower mid-range sedan in the late 1960s.

The Giulia’s characteristic angular design was not only a reflection of modern styling but also aerodynamically well thought out. Its drag coefficient (cd) of about 0.34 was exceptionally low for a four-door sedan of that era. The design was the work of Giuseppe Scarnati, Alfa Romeo’s chief designer, while the body styling was developed under the direction of Orazio Satta Puliga, one of the company’s most renowned engineers. Puliga was known for harmonizing technology with aesthetics. The Giulia was among the first production sedans with a body structure specifically designed with crash safety in mind—a rare feature at the time. The chassis, with independent front suspension and a solid rear axle, combined with disc brakes on all four wheels, provided confident and composed handling.

The 1.3 TI version represents the technical maturity and stylistic clarity of the series. Its interior was understated yet of high quality, featuring a well-organized dashboard and fine details that enhanced the driving experience. The Giulia was popular with both family men and driving enthusiasts alike—a true all-rounder with character.

The Story of the Alfa Romeo Giulia 1.3 TI – SSC639

The Alfa Romeo Giulia 1.3 TI offered here is an original Italian first delivery. It was registered on January 2, 1969, in Gorizia (Italy) with the license plate G=48221 and, according to copies of the original Italian documents, remained with its first owner until 1995—26 years later—when it was sold to a second owner, also in Gorizia. In 1999, it was sold to a new owner in Udine and, in 2009, brought to Mainz, Germany. A year later, it went to its most recent owner in Neuler, Baden-Württemberg. A very clear and traceable history.

This Giulia was delivered in the color “Azzuro Spazio.” Combined with the original and very well-preserved interior, this is a rare and elegant color combination. This Giulia has always been lovingly maintained. Rust is not an issue with this vehicle. We suspect it was repainted about 20 years ago. Unfortunately, no service records are available. However, the original service checkbook is still present—a rare and charming detail.

Technically, the car is in very good condition. The engine purrs like a kitten, the transmission shifts precisely, and the brakes perform reliably. The electrical system is also in flawless condition. In short, this is an excellent Giulia from the first series, ready to embark on new adventures with its next owner. Italian “Dolce Vita” is guaranteed with this very practical four-door sedan.

Summary

A stunning icon awaits an admirer of Italian driving culture. Pure driving pleasure, a fascinating twin-cam engine, timeless design, and wonderful sporty comfort—this seductive mix continues to captivate even after more than 50 years. Finding a Giulia like this, in original, unmodified condition, is extremely rare. Spare parts are still available at reasonable prices. We are happy to handle servicing and parts supply, either directly or through our new sister company, Scuderia Sportiva Servizio (formerly Alfa Classic Center) in Dortmund.
