History

BMW took over the Glas company in 1966 and inherited fantastic Frua coachwork commissioned by Hans Glas; used in the Glas 1300 and 1700 GT Coupé. Another Frua design was the large Gals V8 Coupé. BMW streamlined the Glas sales programme at the time and fitted, among other things, the legendary and rev-happy 1.6 litre BMW ti engine in the GT Coupés, fitted with 2 twin Solex carburettors and good for 105 bhp. Furthermore, the front axle was modified and, among other technical modifications, "space" was created for the legendary BMW kidney. This breathtaking bodywork combined with this racy engine, an exceptionally successful combination, as the specialist journalists also attested. The crux of the matter was that BMW was launching the 02 series at the same time and these were competing with the 1600 GT. So after just under 1 year of production and approx. 1250 vehicles, production was regrettably discontinued in August 1968.

Vehicle history of the BMW 1600 GT offered here

The BMW 1600 GT offered here is verifiably second-hand. The original cardboard cover is also present. This BMW was first delivered in August 1968 in silver metallic and was one of the last BMW cars to be produced with the special Frua dress. Over the years this coupé was repainted by the first owner in the current colour. According to the heirs, the silver metallic was just too boring for the first owner. A few years ago, this 1600 GT was sold by us to its second owner. Despite all the fascination, the second owner, who was over 2 metres tall, simply couldn't cope with this racy car and so we now have the opportunity to offer this 1600 GT on the market for the second time. The engine is still original, the chassis and the brakes are impeccable and the bodywork and paintwork are still without complaint. A Takata sports steering wheel is currently fitted, as well as contemporary aluminium rims. The original steering wheel is included. A touch of patina is of course evident, but adds to the exceptional flair that surrounds this vehicle. Most BMW 1600 GTs are in the hands of collectors. From our point of view, this sports coupé should not be missing in any ambitious collection, true to the motto: "Joy of driving".
