Car description

History of the M1

The first mid-engine sports car from BMW appeared in 1978. This BMW icon was drawn by the star designer of his time: Giorgio Giugaro. BMW commissioned the struggling company Lamborghini to design parts and build the first M1. Lack of quality and unreliability at Lamborghini meant that after a few models, the "joint venture" was drawn to a close. It was then decided that the Italian specialist Marchesi would supply the tubular space frames and T.I.R. made the plastic body. Italdesign already had experience with the discontinued production of the Maserati Bora (also a mid-engine sports car) and as a result now assembled the bodies on the frames and transported the finished bodies to Baur in Stuttgart. Motorsport GmbH, founded especially for the M1, supplied the engines there and ZF the drive. Baur then completed this M1, a civilized racing car for the road. Obstetricians were Jochen Nerpasch and BMW engine guru Paul Rosche. Without a doubt, the M1 is still an icon of BMW sports cars, which was certainly also due to the BMW Procar racing series created especially for it, which took place in 1979 and 1980 before the actual Formula 1 races. The famous F1 drivers like Niki Lauda 1979 and Nelson Piquet 1980 each achieved the overall victory. Flat, wide, wedge-shaped were the optical ingredients, two overhead camshafts, a 3.5 liter 6 cylinder four-valve engine (a sensation at the time) with 277 hp, 5-speed ZF transmission and mid-engine concept, the technical ingredients for this BMW legend.

Vita of the M1 offered here

Our BMW M1 was completed on March 1980 in the color orange and delivered to the company Seeger & Hoffmann in Switzerland. At that time this company produced GRP parts for Procar M1 vehicles and was probably also responsible for the repainting in the current color “red”. A short time later, the M1 ended up in a collection in Germany and then probably in 2007 with a mileage of 2,876 in a collection in Ireland. The M1 was serviced in this time by Munich Legends (invoices are available) and evidently moved a lot more, because in 2010 it was sold to a German collection with at that time 7,297 KM. In Germany, renowned BMW M1 specialists overhauled the control unit, as well as the ZF transmission including differential and the complete brake system. The odometer is now just over 11,000 kilometers. Of course, there are invoices and a service book available.

The interior corresponds is in wonderful condition. Nothing is worn, scuffed, or damaged. The overall condition of this M1 is evidence of the careful and forward-looking handling of this mid-engined sports car. Only the front hood could be repainted. Otherwise the condition is immaculate. The BMW drives as it should, the chassis is crisp and tight, the gears can be engaged precisely, the engine is a poem in its spontaneous response.

Conclusion: A real collector's item from BMW with a very low mileage, of which only 453 pieces have been built.

Notice:

The mileage is read off and we cannot guarantee the actual total mileage for such an old vehicle. This offer is subject to change and subject to prior sale. Before delivery, we offer a major inspection (for a separate expense allowance), during which the technology, i.e. engine and transmission, chassis, axles, brakes are serviced again, all fluids are changed and all functions are checked. For German customers, we also offer a new MOT including approval as a classic car, as well as support with registration in Germany, valuation reports, etc. In Europe, transport in a closed trailer, plus organisation of container shipping for the rest of the world.
