Car description

History of the C1:

The first Corvette C1 saw the light of day in stores in 1953 and was a brilliant flop. The original Corvette not only looked too chubby, but was simply too weak with its 6-cylinder engine. Hardly anyone wanted to buy the first version when there were much more potent show cars to buy from the competition. Bob Cadaret as designer and Zora Arkus-Duntov had the brilliant ideas with which they made the C1 an icon of the American car world. The side hollows ("coves") look as sinful and sensual as the curves of the Monroe and the instruments and the chrome look as if they were inspired by the Wurlitzer jukebox. The revised 56 'version was then presented for the first time in the Waldorf Astoria in New York. Zora Arkus-Dontov came up with the idea of installing a 4.3 liter V8 in the Corvette. The new line with the smaller headlights and the chrome-plated radiator grille were much more popular with the public. The stability of the box frame with its X-struts is reminiscent of the Golden Gate Bridge. Trapezoidal wishbones with the front independent wheel suspension and four drum brakes that were very easy to adjust were the state of the art at the time. The 4.3 liter engine was available with different carburettor equipment, most of which were ordered in the double carburettor version with 225 hp. Only 3,657 of this version were built. The Corvette is thus the longest continuously built sports car in the world.

History of SSC # 495

The C1 offered here was produced in 1956 at the St. Luis plant. Delivered to Chevrolet representative Ernie Porter in Pasadena California in August 1956. Originally it was delivered with the following options: 101 heating - 102 radio - 109 windscreen washer - 290 whitewall rims - 419 hardtop - 440 two-tone paint (810 onyx black / silver met.) - 473 electric hood. From 1956 to 2010 this Corvette was exclusively owned by the Darby family in Arcadia California before it was discovered and bought by a Cologne collector. Together with his son, this vehicle was lovingly restored by its new owner over the years. Attention was paid to every detail, because the objective was to restore this vehicle to its original condition. The result is fascinating and an example of first class craftsmanship. A Corvette, perfect in every detail, is waiting for its new owner. It's hard to resist these stunning body lines. A fascinating American sports car. A real icon. We sell this Corvette C1 on commission for the consignor.
